• Every argument has two phases: the ignition phase and the cooling phase. The ignition phase is when emotions escalate, defensiveness rises, and our nervous system begins reacting instead of listening.
• Learning your “tells” during ignition matters. Paying attention to your physical, emotional, and mental signs of escalation can help you recognize when you are no longer having a productive conversation.
• Most arguments are not actually solved in the moment of conflict. Real repair and understanding usually happen later, during the cooling phase, when everyone has had time to regulate, reflect, and reconnect.
• In healthcare practices especially, understanding conflict patterns can improve communication, reduce team tension, and help leaders navigate difficult conversations more effectively under pressure.
