Is There a Correlation Between MBTI Types and Enneagram Types?
In a word, no. As I explained in past blog posts, the MBTI and Enneagram actually measure different elements of the human personality--the WHAT (MBTI) and the WHY (Enneagram)--and therefore do not seem to have a lot of overlap between the Types of MBTI and the Types of Enneagram.
Though there are no direct correlations between the Types in these two Typology systems, there can be trends that allow for a small fraction of correlation. In fact, John Richards and Tom Flautt conducted a study to try to find correlations between the Enneagram and MBTI in 1997 with 1500 participants. What they found was that from this pool of participants that certain preferences could potentially be linked to a Type, but the correlation was small. Results from John Richards and Tom Flautt Study:
Though this study tested a lot of elements of these two Typology Systems and used a large number of participants, it did leave out Instinctual Drives as a component in their study. Future studies could be conducted on how Instinctual Drives, especially the Instinctual Stackings, influence the correlation of preferences in MBTI with potentially even more helpful information, since, arguably, our Instinctual Stacking influences some of the ways we interact with the world even more than our Enneagram Type.
